Position Summary
The Chemical Analyst will join General Motors’ Materials Science and Engineering team, providing expert analytical support for the development and validation of automotive materials. This remote role focuses on executing laboratory tests, interpreting data, and ensuring compliance with internal quality standards and external regulatory requirements. The analyst will collaborate with cross‑functional teams to drive material performance improvements and support product launch timelines.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform quantitative and qualitative analyses using techniques such as chromatography, spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry.
- Operate, maintain, and calibrate laboratory instrumentation, ensuring optimal performance and compliance with safety protocols.
- Prepare, process, and document samples according to standard operating procedures (SOPs) and project specifications.
- Analyze experimental data, generate reports, and present findings to engineering, R&D, and quality assurance teams.
- Develop and validate analytical methods to support new material introductions and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Maintain rigorous quality control records, perform root‑cause investigations, and implement corrective actions when deviations occur.
- Utilize scientific software tools, including ChemDraw and data‑analysis platforms, to document structures and interpret results.
- Participate in internal audits, regulatory inspections, and external vendor assessments to ensure compliance with industry standards.
- Mentor junior analysts and contribute to knowledge‑sharing sessions within the laboratory community.
Required Qualifications
- 4 to 9 years of hands‑on experience in analytical chemistry within an industrial or research setting.
- Proficiency in laboratory techniques such as titration, extraction, chromatography (GC, HPLC), spectroscopy (FTIR, UV‑Vis), and mass spectrometry.
- Demonstrated ability to operate and troubleshoot analytical instrumentation.
- Strong data analysis skills with experience using statistical software and generating technical reports.
- Solid understanding of quality control principles, Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), and regulatory compliance.
- Experience with scientific software, particularly ChemDraw, for molecular visualization and documentation.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information to non‑technical stakeholders.
- Self‑motivated, detail‑oriented, and capable of managing multiple projects in a remote work environment.
Required Education
Post‑graduate degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related discipline.
Desired Skills
- Familiarity with automotive material specifications and performance testing.
- Experience with statistical process control (SPC) and design of experiments (DOE).
- Knowledge of environmental, health, and safety (EHS) regulations applicable to chemical laboratories.
- Proficiency in additional scientific software such as MATLAB, Origin, or Python for data scripting.
- Certification in laboratory safety or quality management (e.g., ISO 17025).
Compensation & Benefits
The position offers a competitive salary range of $58,000 to $94,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
