Position Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Principal Technical Writer to join our Backend Engineering team. This is a fully REMOTE position, allowing you to work from anywhere within the United States. As the Principal Technical Writer, you will be responsible for creating and maintaining high-quality documentation for our backend systems, APIs, and infrastructure. You will collaborate closely with engineers, product managers, and other stakeholders to ensure our documentation is accurate, comprehensive, and easy to understand. You will play a key role in improving developer experience and enabling efficient knowledge sharing across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan, research, write, and edit a wide range of technical documentation, including API documentation, system design documents, troubleshooting guides, and user manuals.
• Collaborate with backend engineers and product managers to understand technical concepts and translate them into clear and concise documentation.
• Maintain and update existing documentation to ensure accuracy and relevance.
• Develop and maintain documentation standards and style guides.
• Identify opportunities to improve the documentation process and tooling.
• Create tutorials, code samples, and other resources to help developers effectively use our backend systems.
• Advocate for the importance of documentation and promote a documentation-driven culture within the engineering team.
• Participate in code reviews and technical discussions to gain a deeper understanding of our systems.
• Act as a mentor and guide junior technical writers, providing feedback and support.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Technical Writing, or a related field.
• 8+ years of experience as a Technical Writer, with a focus on backend systems and APIs.
• Strong understanding of software development principles and backend architectures.
• Excellent writing, editing, and communication skills.
• Experience with documentation tools and platforms, such as Confluence, Git, and Swagger.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a remote team.
• Proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
• Must be based in the United States and able to work remotely.
• Must be able to overlap at least 4 hours with Pacific Time working hours.

Technical Requirements

To ensure a smooth and productive remote work experience, the following technical requirements apply:

• Home Office Setup: A dedicated and quiet workspace free from distractions.
• Internet Speed: Reliable high-speed internet connection with a minimum download speed of 50 Mbps and upload speed of 10 Mbps.
• Equipment: A company-provided laptop and monitor. You are responsible for your own headset, keyboard, and mouse. A home office stipend will be provided to help with setup costs.
• Communication Tools: Proficiency with remote collaboration tools such as Slack, Zoom, and Google Workspace.

Desired Skills

• Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS or Google Cloud.
• Familiarity with scripting languages such as Python or JavaScript.
• Knowledge of OpenAPI specifications.
• Experience with content management systems (CMS).
• Experience with video creation and editing.

Compensation & Benefits

The annual salary range for this position is $140,000 - $180,000, commensurate with experience and location. This is a fully remote position, allowing you to work from anywhere in the USA.
